In middle school chorus, we learn how to sing . . . . Simple, right? In a way, yes, but to be an independent, creative, and musically-literate singer requires years of study and practice. We are learning how to not only sing, but sing in the healthiest way possible to keep our voices strong throughout our entire lives. We are learning how to read music, singing by sight as well as by ear. To do this, we learn the fundamentals of music, enabling them to not only sight-sing, but write their own music as well. Finally, we are learning to perform in a professional, ethical way, expressing ourselves and the feelings and messages of our music for the benefit and enjoyment of others. We perform publicly at least once per semester, and work towards writing and recording our own music to be released as a class album by the end of the school year.
