In the concert band, most of the students have been playing an instrument for at least one year and have already learned the concert Bb scale, a few accidentals, and the other fundamentals learned in beginner band found in Essential Elements for Band 2000. We focus more on expressive qualities of our performance, continue to learn music in more complex time and key signatures, work towards better intonation and listening to each other to be able to analyze and control changes in ensemble timbre, and continue to perfect our sight-reading and instrumental techniques. We perform publicly at least once each semester. Weekly playing tests occur throughout the year where students are assessed on pitch, rhythm, articulation, dynamic (when applicable) accuracy, posture, and overall attention to the conductor's cues.
